You've probably heard the term, but what is a Brazilian blowout — and how is it different from "a keratin treatment"? Here's a clear explainer, including the safety point that matters most.
What a Brazilian blowout is
A Brazilian blowout is a professional smoothing treatment. A liquid smoothing solution is applied to the hair and then sealed in with a blow-dry and flat iron. The result is hair that's smoother, shinier and far less frizzy, while keeping more of its natural body than a full straightening treatment.
It's often used interchangeably with "keratin treatment", but the classic Brazilian blowout tends to give a slightly more natural, less poker-straight finish and usually lasts a bit less time — roughly 8–12 weeks.
How it works
- Consultation and a clarifying cleanse.
- The smoothing solution is applied section by section.
- It's blow-dried and flat-ironed to seal.
- Aftercare advice to make it last.
The safety catch (read this)
Here's the part that matters: traditional Brazilian blowout solutions have frequently contained formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing chemicals, which can be released as a gas when the hair is heated — a recognised health concern for clients and stylists (FDA).
The treatment's name tells you nothing about whether it's safe — the formula does. Always ask the salon to confirm the product is formaldehyde-free. (At OK Beauty Hair, our smoothing treatments are formaldehyde-free.) More detail in is a keratin treatment safe? and formaldehyde-free hair smoothing.
Brazilian blowout vs keratin vs nanoplasty
- Brazilian blowout — quick, natural, ~8–12 weeks.
- Keratin — longer-lasting frizz control, 3–6 months.
- Nanoplasty — formaldehyde-free, sleeker and great for curly/Afro hair.

Is it right for you?
If you want a natural-looking frizz refresh and don't mind topping it up every couple of months, a smoothing treatment is a great option — just make sure it's formaldehyde-free. Not sure which treatment suits your hair? Try the treatment finder or book a consultation in Belfast or Carrickfergus.
